The Bible Jesus Salvation The Gospel Gospel Access Never Even Heard Name of Jesus Everyone St. English (change to name of your language) 15% of global mission giving goes to children Children are workers in the harvest Share Resources The body is a unit VOICE OVER: There is a solution for reaching the vast unreached places of the earth. There is a remedy that will completely turn the world upside down and revolutionize the entire workings of the church. It is: Aim lower, think smaller, give up and go have a cup of coffee. I know you’re thinking, "Amazing! Why didn't I think of that?" But to fully understand the depth of this life-changing statement you need a bit of background … Our sun is but one of billions of stars in the universe and our world is but one of the smaller objects circling that sun. On our planet, there are over two million different species identified so far. Half the species on earth are insects. There are 10,000 species of tree and 15,482 different kinds of fish. Our planet is teeming and alive and yet despite our best efforts to search the stars, not an ounce of life has been discovered anywhere else. Not even the tiniest bacteria. Nothing. But as a human, the entire message of the Bible, Jesus, salvation and everything else that we call "The Gospel" - was written for you and for every other human being. The only problem is that not every human has had a chance to hear it yet. Six billion humans currently inhabit the planet and live there for a worldwide average of 67 years each. Of the entire population of earth, about 1/3 have ready access to the Gospel because of where they live. At the same time, a further 1/3 have never even heard the name of Jesus in any way that they could respond to. That gives us an average of 67 years to get to every single one of them, which would be easy if they all lived in your street, spoke your language and went to the same baseball games (or substitute appropriate sport). To make matters more difficult, we actually have considerably less than 67 years to reach people. An extraordinary fact about humans is that the older they get, the more set in their ways they become. This means that if one believes and follows Jesus as a young human, they will likely do so until they die. And of course, afterwards as well! On the other hand, if a human does not hear about Jesus as a child, they will most likely never follow Him. Right now only 15% of global mission giving goes towards children, even though 60-80% of all responses to the Gospel are made by children. If you formed every person on the earth into a very, very long line, one in every three would be a child under the age of 15. We will be more effective as we explore why Jesus said “The Kingdom belongs to such as these.” Our first challenge in the great commission is to aim at a lower age. We must aim lower. It is said in the gospels “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few.” Already across the world many are seeing that there is a role that children and young people play as workers in the harvest. Leadership does not start at 30 years of age; it starts as a child and a teenager. Children may not know everything as an adult does, but by using their knowledge of the gospel and the enthusiasm of youth, they are able to pray, to share and to serve in their way. As the human population rapidly grows worldwide, there is an increasing number of children and a decreasing proportion of adults. The only way to keep up with the worldwide boom of children is to equip other children to reach them. It is said “You have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.” THINK SMALLER. When you look at the church throughout the whole world you will see some parts that are well-equipped, well-resourced and relatively wealthy and yet have little or no growth. Conversely, you will see other parts that are growing quickly with great energy, but have few means and no wealth. Together as we seek to effectively evangelize, nurture and equip children we need to be willing to share resources more freely and give up the pride of building empires and organizations and put Kingdom-building at the forefront. Whatever it is that we need to give up for the sake of the Kingdom, let's … GIVE UP. It is said that “The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts” and that “Christ is the head.” No one part can do the job alone. No one part has all the answers, the resources, the creativity or the mandate to do it all. We are a body. When one part suffers, we all suffer. To accomplish the Great Commission means having a cup of coffee with someone from the church down the road. Talk to them. Partner with them. Become prayer partners with a struggling church across the globe. We are part of the same body. We are on the same team. GO HAVE A CUP OF COFFEE. A large part of the Great Commission will be accomplished when we Aim lower, think smaller, give up and go have a cup of coffee./resource.aspx?id=85dc2735-6106-4229-a0a0-90ccc5a7dfebAim Lower - Think Smaller Video Script for TranslationThu, 11 Mar 2010 13:28:23Esther quicksketch Quicksketch 1: Mordecai and Esther The Jewish people had been captured by King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and taken away from their home in Judah. Some years later Babylon was taken over by the Persians. During this time there was a Jew called Mordecai who lived in the city of Susa. He had a young cousin called Esther, her parents had died and she was being looked after by Mordecai. Quicksketch 2: Angry King There was a Persian King called Xerxes who was a proud king and liked to display his wealth. He had a castle – the citadel in Susa. It was very impressive with lots of servants. While he was having a banquet, his wife, Vashti, refused to come and show everyone her crown. This made Xerxes very angry with her. Quicksketch 3: Palace, King and Girls Entering The King’s servant suggested the King find a suitable replacement queen. A search began to bring the most beautiful young women from every province for the King to choose a new wife. The girls all went through an entire year of beauty treatments and then they were presented at the palace for the King to choose from. Quicksketch 4: King Chooses Esther The King watched as each woman was presented and when he finally met Esther he liked her more than any of the other women and he crowned her queen. Quicksketch 5: Mordecai and Haman Mordecai came often to the palace gate to keep in contact with Esther. There was another man called Haman who held the highest position in the kingdom and he wanted everyone to bow down to him. The king had given orders for his officials at the royal gate to honor Haman by kneeling down to him. Quicksketch 6: Angry Haman But Haman was furious with Mordecai because he had refused to bow down to him. When he found out that Mordecai was a Jew, he decided that he would not only kill Mordecai but would kill every Jew in the whole kingdom. He was very angry. Quicksketch 7: Haman Speaks To The King Haman organized an audience with the King and prepared a decree to kill all the Jews in the kingdom. He said to the King “the Jews have customs that are different from everyone else’s, and they refuse to obey your laws. We would be better off to get rid of them! Why not give orders for all of them to be killed?” The King agreed and Haman had letters sent with the King’s seal to all the highest officials, governors and leaders in the land to have all Jewish men, women and children killed and their property taken on a particular day. Quicksketch 8: Mordecai Seeks Esther’s Help Mordecai sent information about the plot to kill all the Jews to Queen Esther – his cousin. He asked her to go to the king and beg him to have pity on her people, the Jews! Quicksketch 9: Esther Receives The Message Esther read Mordecai’s message and was afraid because it was against the law to enter the king’s presence without being asked. Mordecai sent another message saying, “Don’t think that just because you are queen you will be spared. If you don’t say something, help will surely come from somewhere else, but maybe you were made queen for a time like this!” Quicksketch 10: Esther Gives Orders To Mordecai; Quicksketch 11: Esther Prays Esther ordered a message be sent to Mordecai saying, Esther: “Bring all the Jews in Susa together and tell them to go without eating for my sake! Don’t eat or drink for 3 days and nights. My servant girls and I will do the same. Then I will go in to see the king, even if it means I must die.” And Mordecai did everything Esther told him to do. Quicksketch 12: Esther Comes To The King Three days later, Esther dressed in her royal robes entered the throne room to see the King. She went in uninvited and waited nervously to see if he would raise his scepter to receive her. He was happy to see Esther and he held out the gold scepter to her and said, Quicksketch 13: Esther Asks The King And Haman To Dinner “Esther, what brings you here? - just ask, and I will give you as much as half of my kingdom.” Esther: “Your majesty - please come with Haman to a banquet I will prepare for you later today.” Quicksketch 14: Esther Reveals Haman’s Plot So it was organized that they would all have dinner together two nights in a row. Haman was delighted. He was being seen as the King’s favorite and the queen had honored him allowing him to join them at their dinner. Queen Esther had other plans. She revealed Haman’s evil scheme to kill all the Jews and the King was very angry. Quicksketch 15: Haman Hanged The king had Haman hanged immediately. Quicksketch 16: Jews Defend Themselves The king made a new law that not only saved the Jews from being killed, but gave them the right to defend themselves against their enemies. On the appointed day, the Jews pursued their enemies and were victorious. Quicksketch 17: Esther The Queen Esther had indeed been made queen for a very special purpose. He looked after his father’s sheep. [D&G 2: David takes supplies] David’s father asked him to take food to his brothers who were with Saul’s army fighting the Philistines. David obeyed his father. He got up early the next morning and left someone else in charge of the sheep; then he loaded the supplies and started off. [D&G 3: David speaks to his brothers & sees Goliath AND D&G 4: David’s brothers surprised – (Dissolve from pic 3 to 4)] David left his things with the man in charge of supplies and ran up to the battle line to ask his brothers if they were well. While David was talking with them, Goliath came out from the line of Philistines and started boasting as usual. [D&G 5: Goliath] Goliath was the hero of the Philistine army from the town of Gath and was nearly 3 meters tall. He wore a bronze helmet and had bronze armour to protect his chest and legs. The chest armour alone weighed about 57 kilograms. A soldier always walked in front of Goliath to carry his shield. Goliath went out and shouted to the army of Israel: “Why are you lining up for battle? Here and now I challenge Israel’s whole army! Choose someone to fight me!” [D&G 6: David talks to Soldiers] David asked some soldiers standing nearby. David: “What will a man get for killing this Philistine and stopping him from insulting our people? Who does that worthless Philistine think he is? He’s making fun of the army of the living God!” [D&G 7: David talks to the king] Saul the king sent for David as soldiers had told him what he had said. David: “Your Majesty, this Philistine shouldn’t turn us into cowards. I’ll go out and fight him myself!” “You don’t have a chance against him,” Saul replied. “You’re only a boy, and he’s been a soldier all his life.” David: “Your Majesty, he shouldn't have made fun of the army of the living God! The LORD has rescued me from the claws of lions and bears, and he will keep me safe from the hands of this Philistine.” "All right," Saul answered, "go ahead and fight him. And I hope the LORD will help you." [D&G 8 & 9: David tries on the king’s armour] Saul had his own military clothes and armour put on David, and he gave David a bronze helmet to wear. [D&G 9: David with big helmet & armour on] David strapped on a sword and tried to walk around, but he was not used to wearing those things. David: "I can't move with all this stuff on. I'm just not used to it." [D&G 10: David with stick & sling] David took off the armour and picked up his shepherd's stick. [D&G 11: David picks up stones] He went out to a stream and picked up five smooth rocks and put them in his leather bag. Then with his sling in his hand, he went straight toward Goliath. [D&G 12: Goliath makes fun of David] Goliath came toward David, walking behind the soldier who was carrying his shield. When Goliath saw that David was just a healthy, good-looking boy, he made fun of him. "Do you think I'm a dog?" Goliath asked. "Is that why you've come after me with a stick?" He cursed David in the name of the Philistine gods and shouted, "Come on! When I'm finished with you, I'll feed you to the birds and wild animals!" [D&G 13: David responds] David: “You've come out to fight me with a sword and a spear and a dagger. But I've come out to fight you in the name of the LORD All-Powerful. He is the God of Israel's army, and you have insulted him too! Today the LORD will help me defeat you. I'll knock you down and cut off your head, and I'll feed the bodies of the other Philistine soldiers to the birds and wild animals. Then the whole world will know that Israel has a real God. Everybody here will see that the LORD doesn't need swords or spears to save his people. The LORD always wins his battles, and he will help us defeat you.” [D&G 14: David running with sling] When Goliath started forward, David ran toward him. He put a rock in his sling and swung the sling around by its straps. [D&G 15: Rock flying] When he let go of one strap, the rock flew out… [D&G 16: Surprised Goliath hit] …and hit Goliath on the forehead. [D&G 17: Goliath falls on his face] It cracked his skull, and he fell facedown on the ground. David defeated Goliath with a sling and a rock. He killed him without even using a sword. [D&G 18: Philistines run away] David ran over and pulled out Goliath's sword. Then he used it to cut off Goliath's head. When the Philistines saw what had happened to their hero, they started running away. They are dark shades. In the glasses, we see the reflection of his computer monitor. There is lots of movement and there are many flashes as he is playing an action game. There is a mild sound of gunfire. Vyper (V/O) I live in so many different worlds. In some worlds there are soldiers, in others there are dragons. But I own them all. The sound from the computer action peaks and then splutters. He has just completed the zone. He begins to look around, tiredly. Vyper (V/O) It’s just much more interesting than my own world. I’ve begun to notice – just recently – that it’s a little too small. Pull back quickly. Vyper is sitting in front of his computer on top of an extremely small Earth. It is barely large enough to hold his chair, his computer and himself. He continues looking around at his small world. Vyper (V/O) This world must have something to offer. He turns back to his computer. Vyper (V/O) But I’m not sure what it is. His hands move back to his keyboard and mouse. He clicks the mouse. There is a resignation. The camera zooms back down and into the screen itself (which is displaying a “Loading…” image). The “camera” passes through that and we end up with a black screen. Vyper (V/O) Every now and then, though, something completely random happens. 12-frame clock wipe to a midshot from beside and behind the monitor of Vyper playing a game. He’s completely immersed in it. Vyper (V/O) Come on… easy… The sound of laser fire. Vyper (V/O) Yes! Never knew what hit ya. Ow, what was that…? From nowhere, a book flies out and hits him in the head. Vyper (V/O) Awe, what is that… His immediate attention is to his forehead, but before long he looks to the black book that is now sitting on the ground near his chair leg. There is a sort of ominous feel about it, with the camera zoom slowing towards it. We see his hand come down and pick it up. Cut back to a head and shoulders shot as he looks at the book. There is no writing on the front or the back. He flips through all of the pages, and then stops at a page. At the moment of stopping, there is a burst from the pages of the book, as if some kind of confetti gun has gone off inside it. The camera pulls back to reveal that Vyper is standing in front of an enormous open Bible, which becomes the backdrop for the following scene (and all following biblical scenes). Vyper V/O The book was filled with… stories. Some of them were a bit strange – like a guy who lay on his side for over a year. Some of them, though, were kinda cool. Like a huge warrior who challenged an entire country. Cut to a close up of the ground further up – we see Vyper in the distance. We see the Bible in the background to keep it visually linked. Accompanied by the sound of a drumbeat, an enormous foot crashes down. It has the visual style of everything else in this world. We see it from behind. Vyper V/O His name was Goliath and he was big, like a boss level monster. With another drum beat, the other foot comes down in front of it (although that is further away as it is walking away). There are a few more drumbeats, each with this enormous figure taking another step. A much smaller figure comes into view – a smaller person walking in front of the giant, carrying their shield. The figure stops walking. Every day he would stand in front of a whole army and dare any one of them to come out and fight him one-on-one. No one ever did. We cut to a front view, starting with the shield carrier and then moving to Goliath, to give us a sense of perspective and how big he is. Vyper V/O At least, until one day… Cut to David walking across the plain, small and bustling, and carrying a stick. Vyper V/O He was just a little kid. A weed. He was so going to get owned. There is the sound of a trumpet or something, to indicate that hostilities have commenced. Goliath starts running towards David, with his shield carrier out from of him. Slightly jerky hand held camera movement, as if he has a news cameraman running just behind him, filming it. He is shouting as he runs. David is swinging his slingshot… Goliath is running… Vyper V/O Only problem is, he didn’t. David lets go, Goliath gets hit in the temple and stops. Vyper V/O Head shot! The camera almost misses it, it takes a moment for the cameraman to stop their inertia and focus back onto Goliath, who is now doubled over and holding the side of his head. Vyper (V/O) Either that kid totally fluked it… David walks up to him lifts the sword from Goliath’s hand. It is very heavy. Vyper (V/O) ...or he was using some kind of cheat code or something. The image dissolves back into the book. We find ourselves back in the real world. Cut to a bird’s eye view of him and the book. The world that he is sitting on is now a bit (50%) larger, but no major focus is made on this fact. We have a number of cross fades to Vyper reading the book in different positions (different spots on his desk/keyboard/holding it up/facing different ways) in order to suggest a longer time frame than we have. Throughout this is this voiceover: Vyper (V/O) According to the book, though, it wasn’t just luck. The book told of many people doing amazing things. But in real life, and not in some kind of game. They could be brave. They could be weak. What they had that made them different was… ...something bigger than the world they lived in. A wall of bible-stylized flame fires up, becoming a transition. Cut to three stylized men, tied up with a number of guards behind them. They are in a large pit. Above them is Nebuchadnezzar, whom we only see in silhouette (for now). He has large robes and an overbearing bishoply headpiece. Behind him is a large gold statue with the same outline as him. Vyper (V/O) Like the three guys with unpronounceable names, who were about to be thrown into a fire because they wouldn’t bow down and worship the King, who had an even longer name. The king did the usual sort of rant. “Do what I say or else?!” The three guys were pretty jumpy, but they said they wouldn’t worship the King or any of his Gods. And they said something else… they said that their God could save them from the fire if he wanted. The King didn’t take it well, and turned the fire up extra hot just to be on the safe side. The flames leap out, consuming them all, including the guards. We pull back to see Vyper watching it all from a corner of the pit, holding the book with the gentle dust trail leading from there to everything we see. Vyper (V/O) The book told many stories of failure. But something new. Something I’d never found in any of my other worlds. Hope. Even when it looked like you’d lost, you could win. Cut to Nebuchadnezzar in extreme close up. Vyper (V/O) The King got a nasty one that day. Not only did the three guys hang around in the fire, completely unharmed… Cut to the flames. The camera pulls back through layers of flat 2D flame to reveal the three prisoners, unbound, and standing tall. Vyper (V/O) But the king saw a 4th person in there with them. Keep pulling back to reveal a fourth – nondescript – figure. And they looked… well, they looked like some kind of God. And the king realised he may have made a small tactical error. The image dissolves back into Vyper’s bible. His world is bigger again. We see him reading it in different poses on his world, which is now much larger. Vyper (V/O) The book told of a God who made everything, and he could step into the world and change things. And according to the book, one day he did just that. God actually came to the world as a man. And showed just a little bit of what this enormous God was like. Cut with a flash of lightning to outside a dark, grey tomb: a cave, with a stone laid across it. Jesus and Martha are there. It is raining and grey. Vyper (V/O) Four different people each wrote what had happened. That this God was bigger than the world itself. Martha is crying. Jesus looks at her. Vyper (V/O) Bigger than nature. Bigger than sickness. Even bigger than death. Jesus Open the tomb. We see the stone being rolled to one side. Sitting just nearby, in focus, is Vyper. He is reading the book. We see the particle trail from the book to the world around him. Vyper (V/O) This man was God. Cut to Jesus. Jesus Lazarus. Come out! Cut to an extreme close up of Vyper. We focus on Vyper and not Jesus or Lazarus for this scene. But just as we started with Vyper’s game in the reflection of Vyper’s glasses, now we see the scene as a reflection. But our focus is on Vyper’s reaction to it. He is really beginning to see everything differently. Vyper (V/O) This God created this world and everything in it. There is a crash of lightning. In the reflection of Vyper’s glasses, Lazarus emerges. There is a lightning flash on Jesus’ face, and the camera does a transition that involves zooming in extremely quickly on Jesus’ face, then pulling out to reveal that we’re in a different situation. He is bloody, cut and bruised. He is either on the actual cross, or close to it. Jesus (V/O) They will make the Son of Man suffer terribly. Flash to a tomb. Jesus (V/O) They will reject him and kill him, but three days later he will rise to life. The camera slowly tracks into the tomb. With a flash, out of the darkness, we catch a glimpse of Jesus’ face just as his eyes open. We do another transition into Jesus’ face, and find ourselves back at the previous scene. The camera starts turning, from Jesus to Lazarus, to Martha, then back to Jesus, then around and we see that Vyper is now standing amongst them, although looking a little uncomfortable, as if he is unsure whether he belongs there or not. It is still raining. The camera does one more turn, faster this time, covering everyone but over the following voice over: Jesus (V/O) (As if addressing a crowd) I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Vyper (V/O) Knowing this God is like having the cheat codes. We make out Jesus and Lazarus hugging in the reflection. Vyper (V/O) Only, it’s not cheat codes. This is how we were always meant to live. Vyper has made some sort of decision. We see him put the book down and stand up. Focus on the book. Vyper (V/O) And there’s one book which tells us all about it. Bring Vyper into shot. We see that Jesus is looking at him. There is a moment between the two of them. Vyper smiles back. The first time we’ve seen him do so. Now sitting on green grass in the real world. We see his hand pick it up. Cut to a wider shot. He is now in a fully-sized world (i.e. it looks flat). His computer is there, but looks quite small now compared to everything else. He flips through the pages and smiles. Then puts the book down on top of the keyboard. We see an extreme close up of it being put down. Vyper (V/O) AND, there’s only one book which tells us all about him. Heavy music as a wind blows the front page open to reveal the words “The Bible”.
