Ubabalo Level 1 Discovery Groups

The discovery group meetings will: - Support coaches in their sports training techniques (space for talking about practical issues, getting advice from each other’s experience).

- Give opportunity for improving coaching, facilitation and administrative skills.

- Go deeper in Bible, faith, coaching techniques and relationship building (network with other coaches).

- Show how the Bible is practical and relevant in life and coaching.

Coaches will grow spiritually as they study God’s Word through the Discovery Bible Study method in a peer environment. They will learn this method well enough to use it in their personal growth as well as with others, such as their families, fellow coaches and players. Tools will be shared with them as to which Bible passages are important to study when teaching someone what the Bible is about.

Mode of Delivery: One of the coaches will lead the modules using a facilitative method. He/she will lead the group through a discovery process, equipping and empowering group members to apply what they learn to their lives. Guidelines and theoretical hand-outs will be given out as extra reading.

Meeting Topics: The topics in the Discovery Group Meetings are designed to be completed in 8-12, two-hour sessions spaced out over 6 months. It includes the basics of sports coaching topics: basic facilitation skills, coaching techniques, parent interactions and general administration. It also covers how the Bible and sports fit together and skills on how to share the gospel with young people. The design allows coaches to practice their skills with their own team between the formal Discovery Group Meeting sessions outlined below. The Discovery Group Meeting will be a safe place to share concerns and successes and serve as a learning support group for all the coaches. Additional optional sessions can be included according to need.
